Khela[2008]
A film by Rituparn0 Ghosh
DVD Rip - 700MB - X.264
Anamorphic Wide Screen Presentation - 6 Channel Sound - Outstanding Quality

Synopsis:
Raja Bhowmick is a serious filmamaker and to him his art transcends all other requirements and even personal relations. Raja wants to make a film on "Nalok" - the story by Abanindranath Tagore. His search for a child actor to play Nalok leads him to Abhirup but Abhirup's parents are not willing to let him act in the film. Abhirup is willing and suggests that Raja kidnaps him. Thats what Raja does and they start shooting in the hills near Kurseong.

As shooting progresses, Raja starts realising how important inter-personal relations are and how his thoughtlessness can hurt others. He starts missing his estranged wife Sheela even more. In the meantime, the distraught parents of Abhirup have approached the Police who are hot on the trail of Raja and Abhirup..

Comments:
Although the story starts off with a kidnapping - albeit with the active collusion of Abhirup, this is really a story of human relations. As the film progresses we see the relations that develop between Raja (Prasenjit) and Abhirup (Akashneel) on one hand and Raja and Anjali (Raima Sen) on the other. We see the camarederie that goes on in a outdoor location of a film. Through flashbacks we see the bittersweet moments of Raja and his wife Sheela (Manisha Koirala). In the end it is these relations that gain primacy over everything else.

Shot in the beautiful locales in the hills around Kurseong, Khela is all out a Director's film. Rituparno is a master at analysing emotions and in this film his mastery is dazzling. With great dexterity he weaves a number of threads together to get his message through. It is to the credit of the Director that we get taken up by the narrative rather than the actors or the characters. Raja is raja Bhowmick the filmamker not Prasenjit. Abhirup is abhirup not just a child actor...The film ends just as the story ends - at just the right moment in time..Credit should also go to some outstanding editing by Arghyakamal Mitra.

That is not to take away the credit from the actors. Prasenjit is superb as the sensitive but selfish Raja Bhowmick. Manisha Koirala complments him beautifully as his estranged wife - it must be the most de-galmorised role manisha Koirala has ever played. Raima Sen does a wonderful job as the dress designer who is at once attracted by the spontaneity of Abhirup and Raja Bhowmick's singleminded devotion to his art. But by far the best is Akashneel as the precocious Abhirup who takes everyone for a dance - from arranging his own kidnapping to his playful observations and his obvious fondness for Raja. Akashneel is brilliant and carries the film on his little shoulders.

The camerawork of Abhik Mukherjee is another plus point. In fact, this film deserves to be watched on full screen or at least in a DVD format to get the best of both the beautiful locales as well the subtle emotions that cross the actors faces.

One of the best films of Rituparno till date..
